Patients suffering with one or more of the following symptoms can be seen for treatment, advice or onward referral as necessary:

• Dry eye (lasting longer than 2 weeks after seeing a pharmacist and trying home treatments)
• Red eye with pain
• Photophobia
• Painful eye
• Flashes and new floaters
• Blurry vision
• Diplopia
• Distorted vision
• Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
• Symptomatic field loss
• Flashes and floaters
• Ingrowing eyelash(es)
• Non-penetrating foreign body

To use this service free of charge patients must be registered with a Hull or East Riding GP and have one of the above eye problems. Patients do not need to register with the selected Opticians.Patients can self-refer without a visit to their GP by calling an optician on the list.

GPs and pharmacists may also refer patients to the scheme. Routine optical check-ups will often pick up any causes for concern, but painful and irritating symptoms or sudden changes to vision should be looked into as an emergency.Patients suffering with the above symptoms can contact one of the opticians to be seen as part of CUES, they can contact either a Hull or East Riding optician.

The service is available 5 days per week and an appointment should be offered within 2 working days.  This standard does not apply to patients with suspected glaucoma who require repeat pressures; these patients should be seen in accordance with NICE guidelines i.e. within 14 days.
